Why is humility important?
Humility is a major part of being a Christian, considering the founder of our religion, Jesus Christ, was humble enough to take the cross without any objection, despite the mocking and torture He endured. We are humble because there is no need to be defensive toward others when we know what the Bible says about being humble. However, being humble doesn't mean putting yourself down or thinking of everyone else as "better than you." It simply means letting go of the pride and arrogance that hinder our walk with Christ. There are two main types of humility. There's the humility you have when you're on top of the world and the humility you need when you're at the bottom, and they're both equally important:
When you're at your highest
It's really hard to be humble when everything is going well for you. You might have won a sports game, gotten an A on a hard test, received several compliments from different boys, gotten 200 likes on your Instagram picture, or simply been right in a little argument. However, remind yourself that it's not really you that did any of those things. You had help from God above. It's not your own doing, so you don't really have anything to brag about. If you're really looking for someone to brag about through, brag about Christ and HIs glory and compassion that made your circumstances possible.
When you're at your lowest
One of the hardest things for us to do is admit we're wrong or that we're not as great as someone else. We tend to get defensive: we make excuses, we get angry with the other person, we blame other things, we argue, we don't take responsibility. Although our natural instinct is to be defensive, that's not how God wants us to react. When you make a mistake, when someone is bragging over you, or you were simply wrong, take it with grace and humility. Being wrong isn't the end of the world, and often times, admitting you were wrong will earn you a lot more respect than being right in the first place.
